May 2017 Operation Walk Carolinas will travel to Cuba to perform critical hip and knee joint replacements for people who otherwise could not afford them. Having a life-changing operation for some people in that country is simply not an option because they don’t have access to such treatments. Implants are not available and there are no trained surgeons or health care providers to take care of them. These people are left to live a life of pain and disability.
This lack of access to joint replacement has a trickle-down effect much greater than just dealing with the pain of disabling arthritis. With the pain or disability of such joint conditions, sons and daughters have to stop going to school, learning to read, learning to write. They must often enter the workforce to provide for the needs of the family.
We are thrilled to launch Operation Walk Carolinas in Charlotte, a joint effort between teams at OrthoCarolina, Carolinas Healthcare and Novant Health. This private, not-for-profit volunteer medical services organization will provide free surgical treatment to patients in developing countries. We couldn’t be more ready to get started on our endeavor to head to Cuba later this year and help patients who have no access to life-improving care for arthritis or other debilitating bone and joint conditions. We’ll also educate in-country orthopedic surgeons, nurses, physical therapists and other healthcare professionals on the most advanced treatments and surgical techniques for diseases of the hip and knee joints, to help create a lasting contribution to patient care.
It will cost $150,000+ to get our team of 20+ there with the right equipment and supplies. Here is how your generous funds may be used for our mission. Any donation small or large is appreciated and we thank you in advance for your contribution to help the people of Cuba.
