Our Work

9 out of every 10 people aren’t covered by any form of healthcare insurance in developing countries, equating to 90% of the population.

We believe that everyone deserves a better quality of life. Where people have little to no access to medical care, it
can mean life with painful arthritis, in a wheelchair, or in a bed. In many cases, the inability to walk means the inability
to make a living and support their family.

Mobility changes everything

This lack of access to joint replacement has a trickle-down effect much greater than pain or lack of mobility.

Health

Joint replacement surgeries relieve pain and suffering, restored mobility, self-dignity, self-reliance and enable patients to return to a normal, productive life.

Work

Joint replacement surgeries allow patients to go back to work and help provide for their families

Community

Joint replacement surgeries improve individuals’ health and positively contribute to the development and well-being of an entire community.

Families

Joint replacement surgeries directly impact families by improving health outcomes, increasing economic stability, and enabling significantly more opportunities for education and personal growth.

In developing countries, most people do not have health insurance, and many people don’t have access to surgical care when they need it. That is where OpWalk steps in.

How we are tackling the mobility crisis

We educate at the local level to continue the work after the team leaves.

Not only does the Operation Walk Carolinas team provide life-changing orthopedic surgeries to people in Honduras. We also educate in-country orthopedic surgeons and other healthcare professionals in advanced surgical techniques, treatments for diseases, and the recovery procedures of hip and knee joint conditions.

In addition many healthcare workers travel from other countries while we are in Honduras to learn. If we can leave each of these team members more empowered to help the people of Honduras, they we have succeeded.

We leave our supplies behind.

One of the goals of our mission is that we do not use so much as a band aid from the hospitals that we work in. We bring 100% of the supplies that we use. In addition, when we leave, we leave all of our supplies. While it is easy for us to start over, many of these basic supplies are not available to cost prohibitive in Honduras. Thus it provides one additional way we can help.

In addition to doing total joint replacement we also do additional community work while we are there. We educate in-country orthopedic surgeons, nurses, physical therapists and other healthcare professionals on the most advanced treatments and surgical techniques for diseases of the hip and knee joints.

Jose Walks Again

José lives in Panama and until recently, had been living with pain and immobility from hip dysplasia for most of his life. As the pain had gotten progressively worse, he finally found himself using a wheelchair most of the time.
